White stone entrance

150 East 72nd Street is an iconic pre-war building located in the Upper East Side. The exterior has remained unchanged since its completion but in 2013 it was converted into a condominium and remodeled by Harry Macklowe. The changes were designed by Handel Architects and Moed de Armas & Shannon Architects[1].

There were a few interested parties before Macklowe purchased the building such as Arsenal Holdings. Initially the building held thirty four rental units but by the end of the remodeling there were twenty two new condods [2].

Located on the southeast corner of Lexington Avenue in the Upper East Side of Manhattan 150 East 72nd Street is a walking distance from excellent places to eat and is close to transit that make entertainment spaces such as the Lincoln Center for the Preforming Arts quite accessible. The nearby parks include Central Park.

Walkscore rates this location as a walker's paradise as daily errands do not require a car, however it has a lower bikeable score as there are minimal bike lanes in the area [3].

Early stages of the renovation

The renovations were completed in 2014, exactly one hundred years after its construction. The entire infrastructure and aesthetic design were enhanced to a luxurious standard of living. The combination of the amazing details of the pre-war architecture and the sophisticated features of the modern design give 150 East 72nd Street a unique character [4]

The building has been described as a dynamic and symmetrical architectural composition with a white stone entrance and spacious lobby. [5]

Layout and Features

Each unit has solid oak flooring, large living and dining rooms, and windowed eat-in kitchen. Additionally, all kitchens are equipped with stainless steel Miele appliances and pantry. The bedrooms have custom Poliform closets and the bathrooms have polished chrome fixtures and Italian marble. [6]

Although the units come with luxurious finishes the apartments still have some of the prewar details such as beamed ceilings and classic sprawling layouts. With only two residences per floor each unit has its own elevator landing.

Since the building is over 100 years old, it was not constructed with the environment in mind. However, the appliances installed after the renovation are energy efficient and as the building is centrally located it allows the residents to do most of their errands within walking distance which, eradicates the potential carbon emissions produced if a car was used.

Commissioner's Plan of NYC, early 1800s
  • It has been speculated that the actress Emma Watson, known for her role as Hermione in the Harry Potter series, has set her sights on this building [7].
  • The building is located in an area called Lenox Hill. It is called after immigrant Scottish merchant Robert Lenox who owned approximately thirty acres of land back in the 1800's. He bought this plot of land for around $100,000 (in current dollars) [8].
