Interior Design styles at the time of construction

80 Central Park West is, as its name suggests, right on the edge of Central Park. Spectacular views are offered to all residents, either looking towards the Park, or onto the city skyline. Those looking across the park, may see a glimpse of the Central Park Zoo.

80 Central Park West is located in the Central Park West Historic District. The architecture in the area is a mixture of late 19th and 20th Century buildings. There are all different styles of architecture in the area, including art-deco, gothic, and romanesque.

Prior to the construction of the building, the property was occupied by four brick-faced buildings of five, six, and seven stories and a vacant lot.

In the 1960's interior design was very different, yet construction practices were typically the same, they are now just more efficient. Wall paper was a common finish material for interior walls. They were mostly covered in patterns and accented with pastel colors. Now, in 2013, wallpaper walls are starting to come back, but they have more subtle patterns than those in the 1960s.

Sheep Meadow

Residents of 80 Central Park West are very close to Lincoln Center, Columbus Circle and restaurants including the Leopard at des Artistes, Café Fiorello, Sarabeth's and Shun Lee West.

Service and retail stores in the area include the Apple Store, The Gap, Banana Republic, Best Buy, Brooks Brothers, Hugo Boss, Tourneau, Bennaton, and Gracious Home.[1]

The amenities make the area very walk-able and most errands do not require a car. Within walking distance is Ocean Life Cafe restaurant, Cafe Saint Honore cafe, Great Farm Inc groceries, and Sheep Meadow. [2]

The building was originally 173 apartments, but in 1979, it was transformed into a cooperative building and some of the units were combined, making it have 160 units.[3]

80 Central Park West is a white-brick building with tons of balconies including south corner balconies that wrap around the corner to take maximum advantage of the views.

The windows are made from three layers of glazing, yet without the air gap, they are still considered to be a single pane window. This results in a great heat and energy loss which essentially makes the operation of the building more expensive because the heater had to provide more heat.

Layout and Features

Many individual renovations have been done to various suites in the building since the original building conversion. The features in the suite vary according to the previous owners, but it is safe to say that every suite had large windows, lots of natural light, and views of either central park or the city skyline.

Some units contain stainless steel appliances such as a SubZero refrigerator, Viking cook top, and a Miele dishwasher. There is also a glass top breakfast bar and a pull out pantry.

Other suites may contain large master bedrooms with two walk in closets. The bathrooms could be finished win marble tiles walls with high end fixtures or, it could be a pebble-tiled bathroom.

Featured in some units, are wine refrigerators, custom lighting systems, hardwood floors, balconies, crown moldings, custom cabinetry, storage space, and luxury bath tubs. [4]

Restoring architecture, like what was done with 80 Central Park West, has environmental benefits. When a building is restored, waste is kept from the landfills because the building doesn't have to be disposed of. Re-purposing a building means to responsibly re-use existing resources.

It protects the building's infrastructure and has a lower embodied energy than constructing a new building in regard to energy, labor, and money.

There is somewhat of a challenge when it comes to restoring buildings because it is often left a little too late. Many repairs are not properly corrected due to lack of knowledge. If there is not enough hot water, someone may simply think to get a hot water tank, without realizing it may be a piping problem. This sometimes gives restored buildings a bad reputation.

When a building restoration is successful, the performance of the entire building in enhanced. The thermal energy is enhanced, seals prevent the passage of air, there is a higher return on investment, and the building ultimately lasts longer.[9]

  • No building on Central Park West has more balconies than 80 Central Park West. One of the most famous balconies in history is the balcony in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Everyone knows the story and can picture Juliet standing out as Romeo whispers into the darkness. What is interesting, is that even though this scene is referred to as the "balcony scene" there is not mention of a balcony in the script, it actually only says that Juliet appears at a window.
  • The building is a City Landmark.[10]
  • Central Park has appeared in over 240 films.
  • Central Park has over 9,000 benches.
  • There are about 50 hot dog and ice cream vendors around central Park.
  • Sheep Meadow will admit up to 30,000 people per day during the summer months.
  • The purpose of Sheep Meadow was to serve as a parade ground for military drills[11]
  • Ralph Ginsburg used to own a unit on the 16th floor (that was sold in 2007 for $3.56 million). He was a pornographer. He painted the entire apartment black, and floors looked as if something was growing out of them. One of the bedrooms had a mirrored ceiling. In the entry way, he had a green felt wall.
  • The Central Park zoo is open 365 days a year and holds more than 130 different species of animals. The zoo occupies more than six acres of Central Parks land. It opened in 1860 as the first official zoo in New York City. In 1934, it was modified and a sea pool was added.
    • In the 1980s, the zoo underwent a massive renovation and shut down for a few years. When it was re-opened, all the old fashioned animal cages were replaced with environments that replicate the animals homes in nature.
    • The arctic zone houses penguins, polar bears, harbor seals and puffins.
    • At the tropical rain forest section, there are lemurs, sloths, lion tamarins, leaf cutting ants, and small ant eaters.
    • There are many programs associated with the exhibits in order to educate and entertain. You can listen to the lemurs, go birding, spot the mouse deer, learn the butterfly dance, and visit the children's petting zoo where you can greet the goats, sheep, alpaca, potbellied pigs, and other farm animals.[12]
