City Crest, in many ways, acts as a representative for the kind of living experience one can expect from Vancouver's Downtown area. Built in 1994, City Crest stands 29 stories tall, and has 135 units available for both sale and rent.
Developed by the now seemingly defunct Golden City Homes and designed by the prolific firm VIA Architecture, City Crest is a handsome building inside and out, with its aesthetically pleasing exterior matched by the quality construction of its interior. Naturally, it has a variety of amenities to offer its residents, all of them aimed toward enhancing an already fast paced West Coast lifestyle.
Built on Homer Street, City Crest is located in Yaletown and close to the Downtown Core proper, and all the sightseeing and shopping that said proximity entails; indeed, this could very well be an amenity in itself. When one combines this with the others, as well as its design pedigree, it is easy to see why City Crest can be held up as a standard bearer for Vancouver residences - while not the be all end all of luxury residences, it has many coveted elements that homeowners look for.
Located in Yaletown, City Crest finds itself in one of Vancouver's most vibrant neighbourhoods. It was not always so. Originally, Yaletown was an industrial district consisting of structures like warehouses and rail yards. When Vancouver won the bid to host the 1986 World's Fair, the decision was made to transform the neighbourhood. The industrial buildings made way for trendy coffee shops, boutiques, bars, lounges, and many residences. While some of the older buildings still exist today as heritage structures, those are the only remnants to its past. Looking at Yaletown now, one would be hard pressed to imagine it as anything but the hip neighbourhood it is now.
Residents of City Crest will not need a car to go grocery shopping or to do emergency bank runs. There are a myriad of stores and services located to the building's front doors, a statement backed up by its Walk Score of 98. In addition, should one need to travel somewhere outside the confines of the neighbourhood, then Vancouver's transit system is more than happy to serve. Not only are there 53 bus stops near City Crest, but there are also three Skytrain stations a few blocks from the building as well. Avid cyclists can feel free to use their bikes as needed, as the city's terrain is flat, even, and covered with bike lanes.
A concrete structure finished on the exterior with painted concrete, City Crest nevertheless manages to go above its drab description and look visually appealing, thanks to some solid design choices from VIA Architecture. The large amount of floor to ceiling windows on the structure's exterior makes an excellent contrast to the light brown concrete that makes up the rest of the facade. The asymmetry of City Crest also contributes to the aesthetic appeal, as instead of simply being a tall cube with uniform sides the complex uses angles to give a sense of depth to the design. The result is an elegant looking building, albeit one that did not take excessive design risks.
Layout and Features
City Crest's 135 units come in one bedroom and two bedroom configurations, with the number of bathrooms usually equaling the number of bedrooms. The units have a fair size variance, with some one bedroom residences measuring in at around 650-700 square feet and some two bedroom residences measuring in at around 1000 square feet.
The units are fairly well equipped, featuring such luxuries as ceramic tile flooring in the bathroom, floor to ceiling windows, an enclosed solarium, and granite/marble flooring in the foyer. Other features include patios and stainless steel appliances.
City Crest does not currently offer floor plans for public viewing. Thus, curious parties will have to rely on video footage in order to get a good idea of how the units are laid out, in order to form a proper image of what it might be like to live there.

Unfortunately, there is no evidence that City Crest was built with sustainability in mind. With that said, it is doubtful that it is any worse than its contemporaries in this regard, and residents can offset this by being proactive and enacting green measures at home.
For instance, starting to recycle would be an excellent start if residents do not do it already. In addition, constant monitoring of water and electricity use at home will also have a positive effect on the environment.
