Church Street Station in the suburb of Evanston, Illinois provides the all the atmosphere and excitement of living in an urban high-rise without the chaos of living in downtown Chicago.

Evanston is a suburban community 12 miles (19 km) north of downtown Chicago, bordered by Chicago to the south, Skokie to the west, and Wilmette to the north. Evanston has a population of 74,486 as of 2010.

Prior to the 1830s, the area that is now Evanston was mainly uninhabited and consisted primarily of wetlands and swampy forest. However, Potawatomi Indians used trails along higher lying ridges that ran in a general north-south direction through the area, and had at least some semi-permanent settlements along the trails. French explorers referred to the general area as "Grosse Pointe" after a point of land jutting into Lake Michigan about 13 miles (21 km) north of the mouth of the Chicago River.

Evanston was formally incorporated as a town on December 29, 1863, but shrank somewhat in 1869. Evanston expanded again after the Civil War with the annexation of the village of North Evanston. Finally, in early 1892, following the annexation of the village of South Evanston, voters elected to organize as a city and the 1892 boundaries are largely those that exist today.

The 17 story Church Street Station features 18 floor plans among its 103 condominiums, including soft lofts, tower homes, deluxe tower homes, and duplex penthouses. Layouts vary from one to three bedrooms, one to four baths, and have floor-to-ceiling windows, and private balconies or terraces.

The building also features a number of luxury amenities, including a door-person, indoor pool, outdoor sun deck, fitness center, hospitality room, bike room, private storage lockers, and rooftop terrace with garden. The building also has with 17,000 square feet of ground floor retail space.[1]


Located on the southwest corner of Church Street and Maple Avenue in the heart of downtown Evanston, Church Street Station is within walking distance of everything this North Shore suburb has to offer, including upscale dining, shopping, and nightlife as well as the scenic Lake Michigan beaches.

Additionally, the location is close to the Northwestern University Evanston campus and its public amenities, including Big Ten athletics. Public transportation via the Metra Union Pacific North Line, the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) Purple Line, and CTA/Pace bus service is also conveniently located steps away from the building at the Davis Street Stations.

Evanston is home to Northwestern University and several other educational institutions, as well as headquarters of Alpha Phi International women's fraternity, Rotary International, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, the National Lekotek Center, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, the Sigma Chi Fraternity and the Woman's Christian Temperance Union.[2]

The central downtown location is convenient to numerous well know restaurants, music venues and attractions. Residents are within walking distance of Bill's Blues, Space or the Pick-Staiger Concert Hall where they can enjoy a Chicago Philharmonic concert. Also nearby are Akemi Fitness, one of the top rated facilities in the city, and the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art at the university campus.


Focus Development Inc., located in Northfield, Illinois, was the developer of the Church Street Station condominiums. Focus is a development, general contracting, and realty services company specializing in upscale multi-family and mixed-use projects within established urban infill locations. Since its inception in 1993, they have worked to identify, meet and exceed clients expectations through superior craftsmanship, uncompromising service, and an appreciation for quality architecture. Focus has an extensive portfolio within communities such as Winnetka, Lake Forest, Highland Park, Forest Park, and Evanston.[3]

Church Street Station was designed by Otis Koglin Wilson Architects(OKW). OKW has has experienced steady growth and success since its inception in 1959. Originally rooted in corporate interiors and custom residential design, OKW has evolved to become one of the Chicago’s leading providers of architectural, interior, planning and urban design solutions for a wide variety of disciplines.

One of the most momentous changes occurred in the late 1990s when suburban-based Otis Associates, Inc. joined forces with the urban-based Koglin Wilson, to become Otis Koglin Wilson Architects, Inc and in 2006, officially known as OKW Architects, Inc. Notable other projects include the Haper Court Theater redevelopment located in historic Hyde Park of Chicago and OKW's renovation for The Music Institute was formerally designed by Chicago Architect Solon S. Beman.[4]

Construction on the 55 meter (180 foot) tall concrete building began in May of 2001 and was completed in November 2002. The postmodern building features an exposed concrete facade. Before construction the site was occupied by two low-rise retail buildings. The one at the corner was home to Las Palmas Mexican Restaurant for many years. Church Street Station was the tallest postmodern building in Chicago's north suburbs at the time it was completed.[5]

Layout and Features

Church Street Station is made up of one to three bedroom apartments ranging from lofts to duplex penthouse units. Apartments have one to four baths, feature floor to ceiling windows for a bright and airy environment, and provide residents with private balconies or terraces. Open floor plans and 11 foot ceilings contribute to the spacious feel of the units. The building also sports access to satellite television and central heat and air conditioning.

Church Street Station allows gas or electric grills (no charcoal) to be used on balconies and terraces.

Rentals are allowed with a maximum of 20 units in the development to be non owner occupied at any one time.

Pets are allowed (with some restrictions against exotic or dangerous animals).

There are no age limits on residents.[9]


The five-story garage at Church Street Station features a "green roof" with a layer of lightweight soil and landscaping to minimize heat emissions and water runoff. residents can live a greener lifestyle by making personal choices such as switching to CFL or LED light bulbs for their homes, recycling as much waste as possible and by limiting the use of a car for their day to day needs.

There is an abundance of shops, restaurants, and cafes nearby mean that many day to day errands can be accomplished on foot. Walkscore assigns a score of 91/100 to the building.

Availability of about 10 transit routes and several car shares nearby mean that car ownership can be optional for some residents.[10]

  • Evanston is also home to the world headquarters of Rotary International. Rotary International is the world's first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide.
  • Evanston is the birthplace of Tinkertoys, and Evanston, along with Ithaca, New York, Two Rivers, Wisconsin, and Plainfield, Illinois, also lays claim to having originated the ice cream sundae.
  • Evanston was a dry community from 1858 until 1972, when the City Council voted to allow restaurants and hotels to serve liquor on their premises. In 1984, the Council voted to allow retail liquor outlets within the city limits.
  • Evanston's variety of architecture in combination with its easy access to Chicago, make it a popular filming location. As of December 2008 Evanston is listed as a filming location for 65 different films, notably those of John Hughes. Much of his 1984 film Sixteen Candles was filmed in and around Evanston, as was Home Alone 3. A number of scenes from the 1986 Garry Marshall film Nothing in Common were filmed on the Northwestern University campus and Evanston's lakeshore. Although not filmed there, the 2004 film Mean Girls is set in the Evanston suburbs, and makes several references to the area. Additionally, the baseball movie Rookie of the Year, featuring Gary Busey and Thomas Ian Nicholas, was partially shot at Haven Middle School.
