Duck hunting before construction of del Rey Marina

Cove Marina is located in del Rey Marina. Before the land was a marina, it had been a salt marsh that was fed by the Ballona Creek. The lands were mostly used by duck hunters.

In the mid 19th century, the marina area was considered to be turned into a commercial port. The United Stated Army again perused the idea in 1916, but the idea was economically impracticable. The idea was brought up again in 1936, but the San Pedro commercial harbor was more in favor.

In 1953, $2 million was finally authorized to fund the construction of the marina.

As construction was completing, the marina was in danger of a winter storm. When it hit, the result cost millions of dollars in damage repairs in the marina itself and the ships that were anchored there. A breakwater was built to protect the marina from this ever happening again. In 1965, the marina was finally completed at the cost of $36.25 million.

Since September 11th, building practices in Los Angeles have been changing to make the buildings more secure and terrorist proof. Most access to high-rise building has been restricted, and the number of security guards and security systems have been increased. [2]

There have been many tests in the recent past to ensure that buildings are safe from this type of disaster. There are many methods to "terrorist-proof" building. Some strategies include:

  • minimizing glazing
  • bollard lines
  • using short columns (they crush instead of buckling)
  • including panic rooms
  • avoid masonry cladding

There is no report of this building having sustainable practices. Los Angeles is trying to be a more sustainable city. The majority of the electricity used in the city comes from coal plants in Arizona and Utah. By 2010, the city hopes to be using 20% green energy.

Southern California is building a solar farm in Mojave Desert. Also, the Department of Water and Power is working on geothermal projects.

The biosoils from local sewage plants are being converted into clean energy. Solid waste is disposed of in oil wells, and as it decomposes it produces methane, which is a source of green fuel.

Los Angeles requires that all new public buildings meet LEED standards. [9]
