Background

Built in the earlier half of the twentieth century by the real estate firm and developers Wood Dolson & Co., 425 Central Park West is a residential condominium building of seven storys offering 62 separate residences. Some separate residences have been combined to create larger sizes for families.

The original sizes, however, included studio, one, two, and three bedroom layouts. This building offers the character of a heritage building with the modern amenities of new buildings that includes a doorman and concierge service, as well as a rooftop deck and a fitness facility. The building also has an elevator, whereas many others of its size are walk-ups.

With the entrance to Central Park directly across the street from the building, residents can enjoy serene and central living married into one. Central Park West is a highly visited street but it continues to have a peaceful neighborhood feel with its tree-lined, park-bordering presence.[1]



Location

Located in the Manhattan Valley neighborhood of New York City, residents can enjoy an oasis within the city that is both quiet and convenient. The building borders Central Park, and is most near The Pool feature of the park, offering a nearby place of relaxation. Other options of outdoor attractions are available, which include 105th Street Dog Run on the shore of the Hudson River, as well as Morningside Park and Frederickk Douglas Playground that are within walking distance.

Access to the M line subway is across the street from the building, less than one block away. The building is also situated within close proximity to Columbia University, which can be easily accessed by the public transit options that go directly to Columbus Circle, Penn Station, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, the West Village, and SoHo. Many other levels of schools are found in the area. Schools within the catchment include Frederick Douglas Children's Center, Aichhorn School, and Edward A Reynolds West Side High School.

Grocery stores like Whole Foods and its Wine Shop are located within walking distance, as well as many other restaurants, stores, and entertainment. Many coffee shops are also located outside the doorstep of the building, the nearest being three blocks away called Baconery.[2]


Construction

This seven story residential condominium building stands at 21.44 meters in height, and offers an old-world, historic charm with its exterior red-brick façade and concrete structure.

The building's exterior façade also features white terracotta detailing around the entrance, where residents enjoy a covered entry way off the tree-lined street.

Many windows and air conditioning units are visible from the exterior of the building, as well as fire-escape stairs from the roof of the building down to street level.

The building has a classic design with a flat roof-line that provides for the building's communal roof deck available for the use of all residents.[3]

Layout and Features

425 Central Park West welcomes its guests with a fully-attended lobby that has been well kept and maintained in its historic form. The terrazzo clad lobby features wall sconces, paneled wainscoting, leaded glass window transoms, and brass metalwork. This style is repeated on the upper levels where the corridors have been restored with mosaic tile floors.

The common floor plans offered in the building range from studios to two bedroom and two bathroom condos, although some of the units have been combined to create larger sized, family-suited suites. Each of the residences, although many have been individually updated over the years, features hardwood flooring, high ceiling heights, ample closet space, and sunken living rooms.

Arched ceilings at passageways and plaster walls amplify the history of the building. Modern, thermopane windows have been added to the building, and nearly every layout features a windowed kitchen.

One of the building's greatest amenities is the added 3,500 square foot landscaped roof deck that overlooks the greenery of Central Park. Also added recently is the fully equipped fitness center with integrated touch panels, cable television, and iPod compatibility that leads to a private courtyard.

Another newly added amenity is the storage lockers that are available for resident use, and the bike room for bike storage. The shared laundry room is found at the ground level, although some of the units have been updated with in-unit washers and dryers. The building also features a modern security system.[4]

425 Central Park West is a historic building that was constructed originally in 1941 of sustainable materials. The materials used in the construction of the building, such as brick, concrete, and terracotta, are long-lasting materials that generally require little maintenance, and therefore have a lesser toll on the environment.

Nearby the residence is the campus of the prestigious New York City University of Columbia. Columbia University is said to be an upper-scale University offering the best of education. Being so prestigious, it's no wonder the school has a long list of famous alumni.
