Halogen light bulbs are incandescent lights with a small amount of a halogen added. The halogen and tungsten filament undergo a chemical reaction which redeposits the tungsten back onto the filament, therefore increasing the life span and also producing a higher luminous efficacy and color temperature. In other words, its more efficient and brighter.
The lamps get hotter than others due to the heat concentration around the filament and how close the surface is to the filament. This has been a fire concern. In places such as Australia, where the air is hot, it is suggested that compact florescent lamps or light emitting diode lamps be used because they produce less heat.
