The Melville and its iconic sail

If one were to compare Vancouver neighbourhoods to New York City's, Coal Harbour would be considered the Upper East Side of Vancouver. Except, instead of being nestled upon Central Park, Coal Harbour is located next to the Burrard Inlet and Stanley Park. Though most won't admit it, secretly Coal Harbour is the community where most Vancouverites would like to call home. This is due to its location next to the stunning Burrard Inlet, the urban oasis of Stanley Park and of course being next to Vancouver's downtown core. It is this trifecta that has residences in this community commanding some of the highest rates in all of Vancouver, excluding West Vancouver across the inlet.

Built in 2007, The Melville is one of the newest additions to this exclusive community. Located on Bute and Melville, it is about as central as one can get in Vancouver. It is also just two blocks from the waterfront and seawall of Coal Harbour. Its location also affords it views of Burrard Inlet, Stanley Park and the north shore mountains. These views look even better when soaking in Melville's hot tub on the rooftop.

Melville offers residents the latest in luxury living as well as provides an impressive list of amenities. The Melville is catered towards Vancouverites that want to take advantage of everything this world renowned city has to offer. [1]

Melville is located on the street that its name is derived from, Melville Street. This places it just a block from the Burrard SkyTrain Station, offering residents convenient access to the rest of the lower mainland should they ever want to leave.

The Melville is also touches on Pender Street which provides direct access to the Sea to Sky Highway via the Lions Gate Bridge. The Sea to Sky corridor is world famous for skiing, climbing, mountain biking and just about any other mountain related activity.

The scenery isn't half bad either. It is unlikely that residents will take these views for granted even seeing the Burrard Inlet and Coal Harbour on a daily basis.

The Melville is situated in an ideal location since it enables residents to walk to work in the morning and then run or bike to Stanley Park in the afternoon. They can also kayak, swim or climb if they so desire. Oh, and don't forget the beach. This is the type of lifestyle most Canadians can only dream about. [2]

The Melville while still under construction

The Melville is a 42 story structure built in 2007. This means that the one to five bedroom suites available still have their new condominium smell. These suites range in size from 673 to 5708 square feet.

The Melville follows the Vancouverism model by appearing to be made completely out of glass, (it does have a concrete core). This is to get the most of the amazing views offered by The Melville's height and location.

The Melville's defining feature is its roof. To pay tribute to its west coast surroundings it has a glass sail topping off this impressive structure. This sail is best viewed from the buildings rooftop patio, though it will be hard to look past the sweeping 360 degree views of the city. Also included in the construction are a roof top pool and hot tub.[3]

The Melville's location inherently makes it sustainable since it enables residents to accomplish most of their daily errands without a car. Since The Melville is located in the heart of downtown, residents are within walking distance to everything they will need to sustain their existence. The Melville is also located one block from the Burrard SkyTrain Station.

The City of Vancouver has an extensive recycling program that is available in most condominium complexes, including the Melville. [6]

Smokers need not apply for residence at The Melville. In March 2013 the buildings strata council unanimously approved a bylaw that effectively bans smoking within its entire property. This came in response to dozens of complaints of cigarette and marijuana smoke filtering into other's units. Residents caught smoking can now receive a fine of $200 that will be put back into the council's budget. The Melville is the first condominium complex to implement such measures.

Most condominium buildings are crowned by an extravagant penthouse. The Melville's penthouse is no different. This modest residence designed by Michael Booth of San Francisco is 5,700 square feet in size and features 360 degree views of the City of Vancouver and five bedrooms each with their own ensuite bathroom. The list price for the tallest penthouse in Coal Harbour, a mere 10 million. [7]
