Background

Entrance of Optima Horizons


Completed in 2005, Optima Horizons is a 16 story residential building located about 24 miles north of Chicago, in the city of Evanston. As a trendy and affordable residential condominium building of 248 units with four above grade levels of parking, and twelve 30,000 square foot residential levels, Optima Horizons offers a convenient and trendy residence. Optima Horizons is the closest residential tower to Northwestern University, a sought-after and well known University.

As a part of the three building community of Optima Condominiums, Optima Horizons has a similar design to its neighboring, sister buildings, Optima Views and Optima Towers. In particular, Optima Horizons received a Distinguished Building Award from the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects when it was completed in 2005.

With a landscaped grassy area and fountain at its entrance, as well as a rooftop garden terrace on the fifth floor and indoor pool, Optima Horizons offers a spa-like residence.[1]



Location

Optima Horizons is located in the city of Evanston, which is about 24 miles north of Chicago. The building is very close to the Northwestern University, for which Evanston itself is known. Less than four blocks south east is the Evanston Public Library.

Also nearby is the Illinois Technology Enterprise Center. A few blocks east on the shore of Lake Michigan is Centennial Park and Dog Beach Park.

Access to the Metra subway is just a quick walk south of the residences at Optima Horizons. Restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores are all within walking distance. There are many hotels in the area, as well as car and bike share programs being within walking distance. [2]

Construction

Optima Horizons is a postmodern architectural style building. The concrete-constructed residential condominium development has a concrete exterior façade of white, red, and dark brown, with plenty of glass. Silver, yellow, and red metallic accents can also be seen in the design.

With each residence offering outdoor space, many in-laid balconies can be seen from the exterior.

With 16 floors, the building has an overall height of 49.45 meters. Although original design plans called for a 36 story, 345 foot high-rise, opposition from the neighborhood forced the developers to lessen the criteria of the building.

Concrete Structures was responsible for all cast in place concrete work above the caisson level.[3]

Layout and Features

Like the other two Optima buildings in downtown Evanston, the entrance features a fountain and a reflecting pool. Flexible floor plans are found in the building. Every unit on the fifth floor features a garden terrace over the garage roof. All other units feature balconies with views of Lake Michigan.

Interior features include recessed lighting, granite counter tops, kitchen islands, stainless steel appliances, hardwood floors, and wine refrigerators. Cherry hardwood flooring and marble flooring can be found in the residences, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows.

Other features include custom stone entryways, maple cabinets, wide-plank espresso hardwood floors, professionally organized closets, balconies with epoxy pebble stone floors. In-unit laundry is included, as well as central air conditioning.[4]

Northwestern University Evanston

Optima Horizons is located in Evanston with very accessible convenience to Northwestern University. Evanston, Illinois, is a small city and is most well-known for being the home of Northwestern University - had Northwestern not opened its campus here, many are certain the area would not be on the map.

Prior to the 1830s, Evanston was largely uninhabited, and consisted mainly of wetlands and swampy forests. Native Indians would use the area as travelling trails and temporary camping sites. A large historical mark for the history of Evanston was the founding of Northwestern University in 1851. During the 1960s, Northwestern University changed the city's shoreline by adding a 74-acre landfill, transforming the previously swampy area, and allowing it to transform into the populated city it is today.

Northwestern University is also the top employer of Evanston, employing an estimated 5,325 people.[5]
