River Plaza is a high-rise concrete building in Chicago's River North District that was built in 1977. The building was initially purely rentals. It was converted to condominiums for ownership in 1996. The building has 54 floors in total - 51 of which are residential and 3 of which are commercial - and a total of 679 units.
Residences range from small studio condos to larger three bedroom penthouse condos. Residences offer views of the river and Chicago skyline, and many have been updated with in-unit laundry. Many layouts also have huge walk-in closets and tasteful upgrades. There are no balconies off the residences, but there is a common sundeck. View of the Chicago River can be seen from many of the units.
There is a small terrace in the front of the building that connects with the Wrigley Building and Sun-Times to form a public plaza overlooking the river. Located in River North, the area has very easy access to other sought-after neighborhoods of Chicago like the Loop, Millennium Park, the Gold Coast, and the Magnificent Mile.
An extensive list of amenities are included at River Plaza, causing it to be deemed a "full service" condominium building. Valet parking, dry cleaning, and an on-site restaurant are some to name a few.
Located in the sought-after neighborhood of River North District in Chicago, River Plaza offers views and close proximity to the Chicago River, as well as walking distance convenience to public transportation. The M line subway station is three blocks away and bus stations are within two blocks away.
Located across from River Plaza, but not blocking the view, is the Trump International Hotel and Tower. On the other side of the street, and connected to the rooftop plaza of River Plaza is the Wrigley Building, which was the first air conditioned office building in Chicago. It was built to house the corporate headquarters of the Wrigley Company.
Restaurants, cafes, and entertainment are all within walking distance, as well as a great selection of apparel shops just a couple blocks north at The Shops at North Bridge.
Grocery stores, schools, outdoor areas, and car and bike sharing programs are all also within walking distance from River Plaza.
Completed in 1977 and built on a site near the river of 1.12 acres, River Plaza is a 56 story building that stands at 524 feet tall. The building was constructed of concrete, with a white, exposed concrete façade. The building has a flat room and is deemed to be a design of modernism architecture.
The Structural Engineer for the project was Cohen-Barreto-Marchertas and the Main Contractor was James McHugh Construction Co.
Layout and Features
With an original build of 1977, many of the units at River Plaza are original, although some have been tastefully updated with granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, and wood flooring.
The units range from small studios up to three bedroom penthouse units. There are no balconies, but windows are quite large and offer views of the surrounding river and city. Most of the units offer rounded floor plans in the living areas that make the spaces feel larger, and offer additional windows for maximized views and light exposure.
There is a common coin laundry area, but many of the units have been upgraded with in-unit washers and dryers.

Car and bike sharing programs are a great alternative to vehicles, and are also located within walking distance of River Plaza.
Located directly across the street from River Plaza is the renowned Trump Tower, or Trump International Hotel and Tower.
The skyscraper is a condo-hotel named after billionaire real estate developer, Donald Trump, and was designed by architect Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. The 92 story structure stands at a height of 1,389 feet, and is located in the River North District on the Chicago River.
The building became publicly recognized when the winner of the TV show, The Apprentice, Bill Rancic chose to manage the construction of the tower.
In 2001, Donald Trump himself announced that this tower would become the tallest building in the world. Unfortunately, after September 11, 2001, he scaled back the building's plans, revising many of the building's designs. Upon its completion in 2009, the Trump Tower became the second tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, seconded by the construction of the Chicago Willis Tower, also known as the Sears Tower.
Trump Tower did, however, surpass the John Hancock Center as the highest residential building in the world and held this title until the completion of the Burj Khalifa. Trump Tower includes retail space, a parking garage, a hotel, and condominiums. A restaurant on the 16th floor, named Sixteen, opened in early 2008 with great reviews. The hotel has a five-star rating, according to the Forbes Travel Guide.
Today, the Trump Tower is the twelfth tallest tower in the world.
